According to the Ministry of Health, 4205 Covid-19 patients have died in the past 24 hours, a new record for India, bringing the total number of deaths to 254,197 since the start of the pandemic.
The number of confirmed infections has risen by almost 350,000 to 23.3 million, making it the second highest number of infections in the world in absolute terms after the United States.
In large cities, the pandemic is easing, but in rural areas, where two-thirds of India’s population lives, the virus is spreading almost uncontrollably.
Many experts believe that the true number of Covid-19-related deaths is higher in India, one of the world’s poorest-funded healthcare systems.
