in Gironde, sales of board games explode with the health crisis

Here is a sector which does not know the crisis, or almost. The board game is doing well in France this year. With the two confinements, the French had to learn to look after themselves at home. A godsend for board game stores like in Bordeaux, which rub their hands together.

Behind the counter of the Jeux Barjo store in the center of Bordeaux, the manager and his sales staff are keeping their spirits up despite the health crisis. Even if the daily life is not easy, they are doing quite well: “We are lucky, our sector is doing well this year, that’s reassuring”, says Romain one of the salesmen.

The best turnover since opening

And for good reason, this year is almost exceptional for the store. “The day after the announcement of the second confinement, we achieved our best turnover in one day since the store opened six years ago”, jokes Jean-Charles the manager.

A trend already present during the first confinement: “From the first days we were harassed by phone calls”, says the owner of the Bordeaux boutique. As a result, the team rolled up their sleeves to create an online sales website in record time with a home delivery service. “Despite the closure of the business, the numbers are quite similar to last year for the first confinement “, observes the manager in front of his computer.

Puzzle and chess come back in force

To everyone’s surprise, the puzzle is the star of the rays this year. “The last customers did not even have the choice of the illustration. We even sold the pink unicorn, with little teddy bears and wolf dogs. Fantastic the box is gone!“, laughs the manager. According to the professional of the game, there is even a national stock shortage among puzzle creators.

The other cardboard of the end of the year is chess. A sudden interest in the holiday season thanks to the series “The Lady’s Game” broadcast on Netflix since the end of October.
