AT Colombelles, near Caen (Calvados), it is a subject that has come up every year for 6 years, but it is not for all that “chestnut trees” that were planted in March 2021 near the Grande Halle.
Nearly twenty young parents braved the wind and bad weather to participate in this meeting proposed by the municipality in order to plant a shrub for the birth of their child in 2020. In total, 76 trees were planted for the 76 Colombian births in 2020.
Plantations near the Grande Halle now
While the first plantings were done near the Bois de Colombelles, it is the area around the Grande Halle that has been chosen as the site for planting young shrubs since last year. This year, oaks and arbours will rub shoulders with forsythias and their abundant golden yellow bloom that heralds spring.
According to Marc Pottier, who came with the double “cap” of mayor of Colombelles and happy father of the little Garance born at the beginning of last year.
In many families, a tree is planted at the birth of a child because it is a symbol of life, it is a strong act. The tree grows at the same rate as the child. At the same time, it is a question of teaching the child to respect nature, “his” tree, and to follow its development.
Territory committed to nature
Annie Lemarié, assistant in charge of town planning and sustainable development, suggested to young parents to choose a shrub among the different species to plant and to tie a label on it in the name of the child.
She specifies that “Colombelles is now recognized as a“ Territory committed to nature ”and has presented an action plan for the next three years in favor of biodiversity. The elected official added that the municipality is also preparing a process for the development of an ABC (Atlas of municipal biodiversity) which will inventory and map biodiversity in the municipality with the assistance of experts and the participation of the public, which will make it possible to identify the actions to be implemented by municipal public policies to protect and enhance this biodiversity.
