Sun Dawu sentenced to 18 years in prison

The businessman was arrested along with his wife, two sons and daughters-in-law. Human rights activists consider this to be revenge for the businessman’s friendship with Chinese dissidents.

In China, a court sentenced local agricultural tycoon Sun Dawu, who made a fortune in industrial pig farming, to 18 years in prison for “provoking trouble.” On Wednesday, July 28, the newspaper reports. The Guardian.

It is noted that the businessman was arrested on November 11, 2020, along with his wife, two sons and daughters-in-law. The verdict was delivered after several weeks of secret hearings. The court ruled that Sun Davu was guilty of organizing a crowd to attack government agencies, obstructing government, stirring up quarrels and provoking trouble, and imprisoned him for 18 years.

Such wording is often used in criminal cases during the political persecution of human rights defenders and dissidents in China, the newspaper notes.

Chinese human rights activists believe the persecution could indeed be revenge for the billionaire’s longstanding friendship with Chinese dissidents. Such ties are turning into criminal prosecution due to China’s tough policy aimed at fighting the opposition.

SunDawu is the founder of the Dawu Agricultural and Animal Husbandry Group. His multi-billion dollar business employed nine thousand people. The businessman built a separate city for his employees, where he reflected his vision of a just rural society: in it, residents receive free or preferential access to health care, school education and entertainment.

It was previously reported that first conviction in Hong Kong under the law on national security. The 24-year-old former waiter was convicted of terrorism and calling for a Hong Kong secession. He faces life imprisonment.

And in January in China executed an official accused of corruption… He was found guilty of corruption, bribery and bigamy. He was previously expelled from the party.
