If France is the leading producer of linen in the world, weaving and clothing are carried out in Asia. Near Caen, the Linportant cooperative seeks to reinvent a short supply chain ranging from organic farming to the manufacture of T-shirts. Walk in Norman lands.
Flax flowers only in the morning. In June, for a few hours, the fields are covered with thousands of small blue spots. Their petals will fall off in the afternoon. We are in Calvados, between Caen and the sea. At the edge of his plot sown in April, flax cultivator Alain Gautier discusses the quality of his future harvest with a technical advisor, Patrick Berghman, and the Linportant team: Paul Boyer , its director, and Morgane Ermeneux, the sales manager. This cooperative is due to start a project to manufacture organic linen jersey T-shirts in September.
This year the plants have grown a bit short. “We had our water volumes this winter, but their distribution is out of order, with periods of rain or drought that are too long. Even the temperatures jump from rooster to donkey. We take 10 degrees overnight ”, notes Alain Gautier. Because of these discrepancies, 30% will not be collectable.
