Improving Situation for Mpox Patients in Jakarta: Updates and Recovery Statistics

Jakarta

Head of the Communications and Public Services Bureau of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, Dr. Siti Nadia Tarmizi, said that one Mpox patient who was reported to have had severe symptoms and experienced shortness of breath, is now improving.

The patient is said to have received intensive treatment and direct administration of the Mpox antiviral.

“It continues to improve, because then he got the antivirus for Mpox,” he explained to journalists when met in the Kuningan area, South Jakarta, Tuesday (28/11/2023).

Dr. Nadia confirmed that the fatality of Mpox is not as high as that of other diseases, including COVID-19. One case that was reported to have died last week was also said to be caused by severe comorbidities.

When a patient has comorbidities, their immune system will continue to decrease. Mpox infection also plays a role in reducing the patient’s body’s immunity, making the possibility of complications increasingly difficult to avoid.

The good news is, of the 59 cases identified as positive for Mpox in Indonesia, 36 of them were reported to have recovered.

Previously it was reported that an Mpox patient with severe symptoms complained of a rash on November 12, and was then referred to Sulianti Saroso Hospital for further treatment.

The patient is a person with HIV, when he was taken to a health facility he complained of shortness of breath.

The government says the total number of Mpox cases is actually more than what has been reported. Like an iceberg phenomenon, the estimated cases in a year even exceed 3 thousand people.
