Importance of Date Stamps for Food Safety: Clear Message about Missing Date on Naturall Chicken Fillet Package

– Am I blind or is there no date here?

We had to turn the packet of Naturall chicken fillet from Prior over and over, but can’t find any date. Fortunately, we still have good vision, here the date stamp is missing.

– The date should have been on the front of the package, on the left side lengthwise. Unfortunately, there has been an error in the packaging, says Marthine Haugen Petersen, press contact at Nortura, which owns Prior, to DinSide.

Clear message about this

The agricultural giant has its routines ready, if anyone has questions or a complaint.

– She who has bought this package can contact our consumer center and get the money back.

Best before and after was

According to the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, all processed food must be marked with shelf life, and there are two different date markings to deal with: Best before (but not bad after) and Best before date.

– Easily perishable products, such as minced meat, fish cakes or chicken spreads can become dangerous after a certain date, and have a use-by date. Here it is important that consumers receive clear information that the food should not be eaten after this date, says Catherine Signe Svindland, senior adviser at the Norwegian Food Safety Authority.

The second, larger category is for foods that do not become directly dangerous, even if some time has passed after the date.

DO NOT EAT: You can eat many foods even if they have expired, but you should stay away from perishable items, such as chicken spreads, says Catherine Svindland. Photo: Norwegian Food Safety Authority Show more

– Here the quality can deteriorate, but it is not dangerous. Check if it looks, smells and tastes okay.

There are also some things that never expire, and they are often very sour or very dry, according to Svindland.

– Sugar, salt and vinegar are typical examples. After all, these are also old preservatives.

However, not all foodstuffs have a date stamp, for example fresh fruit or freshly baked bread. The classic applies here: Look, smell, taste.

That is why the date is important

It is not only in connection with the expiry date that the date stamp is important. It is also a means of tracking food products if something has happened, and in connection with recalls, together with the lot number.

– What do you recommend if the food does not have a date stamp?

– If it is a product that will not be dangerous, such as sugar or milk, only use it if you think it smells and tastes good. But if it is easily perishable, such as this chicken spread, you should not eat it.

– Don’t throw it away

If you find it in the shop, you should complain straight away, when you get home, you can contact the manufacturer – or take it back to the shop.

– What is extra difficult with perishable products is that many bacteria do not smell or taste anything, says Svindland.

This applies, for example, to listeria, which can be found in such chicken products.

Because even though the nose is an important tool for checking if something is bad, there are several dangerous bacteria that do not smell or taste anything.
