Immunologists have discovered how to cure cat allergies

UCLA scientists have found that cat allergen immunotherapy works better and faster when combined with the tezepelumab monoclonal antibody. The work was published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

The study involved 121 people between the ages of 18 and 65. Patients were randomly assigned to receive tezepelumab and allergen immunotherapy or immunotherapy alone. Allergen exposure was administered by nasal spray and tezepelumab was injected.

Control groups received placebo injections, a placebo spray, or a double placebo. After 48 weeks, participants who received both treatments had 36% fewer rhinitis symptoms than those who received standard treatment. One year later, the difference between the symptoms in the two groups was 24%.

The results were confirmed by immunological analyzes.

Tezepelumab blocks the TSLP protein, which is released by the cells of the nose, lungs, intestines and skin upon contact with an allergen. TSLP helps to activate the immune response, which leads to rhinitis symptoms in case of cat allergy.

Allergen immunotherapy is long-term exposure to allergens to reduce sensitivity to them in people with allergic rhinitis or asthma.

However, the method does not work for everyone, and the course of treatment takes up to three years.

Some animals played an important role in the development of medicine. Because without frogs, dogs and pigs it would be completely different, find out in the gallery:
