Venice devastated by the coronavirus 2:06–
(CNN) – The European Space Agency published two images of Venice, taken a year apart, that highlight the impact that the pandemic of coronavirus has had on its famous waterways.
The images, one taken on April 13 of this year and the other on April 19, 2019, show how dramatically the number of ships within the main channel of the Italian city has decreased since the covid-19 crisis began.
Located in the northeast of Italy in a closed bay on the Adriatic Sea, Venice is famous for its network of waterways.
But since Italy announced a shutdown on March 8, the city, usually packed with tourists, has been nearly empty.

In April of last year, there appear to be dozens of ships on the Grand Canal in Venice and the Giudecca Canal, but this week there were far fewer.
The images were taken by the Sentinel-2 satellite of the Space Agency European, which is part of the Copernicus program of the European Commission to observe the Earth and any changes in the environment.
Various closure measures implemented worldwide have had a series of effects on the environment.

Within days of closing, Venetians began sharing photos showing fish visible in the lagoon, which generally has boats that stir up sediment in the water bed.
Meanwhile, thousands of miles away, in India, residents have been able to see the Himalayas for the first time in decades due to reduced air pollution.
Similarly, satellite images taken at United States They have also shown that pollution is decreasing as millions of people stay in their homes.
Italy is among the countries most affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

The number of people in the country who have died with covid-19 was more than 22,000 as of this Friday, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University, with more than 168,000 who have tested positive for the virus.
