– If you can not help, then do not stand and watch – VG

WARNING: “I have witnessed parents who have lifted their children on their shoulders so that they have better visibility,” says the operations manager in the Oslo Fire and Rescue Service, “says the operations manager for the fire and rescue service to VG. Photo: Oslo Fire and Rescue Service

Many people pull out their mobile phone camera when they see an accident. Now the task leader in the Oslo fire and rescue service warns.

Published:

– I do not think it is okay for people who are in their biggest life crisis to be filmed and published on social media. They do not have the opportunity to get up, and we who are there to help them will have to tell them, says operations manager in the Oslo fire and rescue service, Eirik Håheim Pedersen.

On Friday, he published a status on the Oslo Fire and Rescue Service’s Facebook page, which was originally one chronicle in Avisa Oslo.

There he writes that the discussion is not about what is law or not.

“It’s about humanity. We often move out to incidents where people are badly injured or killed. Some of these are deceptive acts, that is, people who want to take their own lives. In other cases, there are accidents. What they both have in common is that they are about people in an extremely vulnerable situation, unable to defend themselves “, he writes.

Pedersen tells VG that he has witnessed countless incidents where people pick up mobile cameras or people who are just spectators.

– Many are attracted to accidents and are spectators. But my call is: If you can not help, then do not stand and watch. We who work in the emergency services are trained to see strong images, but they are not ordinary people. I have even seen parents lift their children up on their shoulders for better visibility. It is completely unnecessary to expose yourself or your children to such strong images, Pedersen says to VG.

Pedersen also says that he does not want a ban on filming, but wants more awareness of why one wants to film.

– People have to ask themselves what they want with documentation in retrospect? What is the purpose of filming? Is there a general interest in what is being documented? Put yourself in that situation: Did you think it was okay for others to film you while you were lying down badly injured? he concludes.
