Already today, the Traffic Department monitors data on road traffic accidents, traffic intensity and traffic delays in Marijas Street, Aleksandra Čaka Street and Krišjāņa Barona Street.

“In carrying out this experiment, the opinion of the population is especially important – the people who live, work and move around this street on a daily basis. Our main goal is to create a comfortable, pleasant, modern and, most importantly, safe environment for all road users,” Chairman of the Affairs Committee Olaf Regiment (JV).

“We will follow each step of the experiment, evaluating both the impact on public transport and the overall gains and losses of traffic flow to achieve the best results,” promises Pulks.

Analyzing the first information obtained, regarding the prohibition of left-turn maneuvers from Čaka Street to Elizabetes Street, it is concluded that currently the problems are in the morning, but during the rest of the day they are less pronounced. The Department of Transport points out that there are no technical problems in order to prohibit this turning maneuver, but it should be taken into account that with such a solution the traffic intensity will increase on four routes: Dzirnavu Street – Kr.Barona Street – Elizabetes Street; A.Kalniņa Street – Kr.Barona Street – Elizabetes Street; Merkela Street – Kr.Barona Street – Elizabetes Street; 13.janvāra street – Satekles street. However, in order to better assess the size and impact of vehicles, traffic intensity data need to be evaluated over a longer period of time.

Among other things, the department is also considering the possibility of deploying platforms to find solutions to problems that occur at public transport stops. However, the department points out that it would not be possible to do this before February.

A number of objections and feedback from the population have also been received, both positive and negative. The department calls on the residents to be understanding and reminds that alternative routes can be used for transit, for example, when driving from the Daugava on the route: Satekles – Valmieras Street, Merkela – Freedom – Pärnu, Krasta – South Bridge – Piedrujas – Braslas Street or when driving from Purvciems, on the route: Braslas – Piedruja – South Bridge – Krasta, Pärnu – Senču – Zirņu – Kr. Valdemāra (Skanstes) Street.

Additional work is currently underway to improve the situation on Aleksandra Čaka Street so that the experiment can run as successfully as possible.

It has already been reported that the experiment with temporary bicycle lanes will start in December and last until April. Experimental bicycle lanes on Marija and Aleksandra Čaka streets were established on November 11.

Including the installation of road signs and signage on the street. Next year, it is planned to carry out street improvement – installation of benches, planting of trees and other improvement works.
