IF Elfsborg vs Hammarby: Match Recap and Analysis

IF Elfsborg lined up with a relatively expected starting eleven where Alexander Bernhardsson took his place from the start when Jacob Ondrejka left for abroad. In Hammarby, Oliver Dovin started on the bench after being ill this week – and instead Davor Blazevic got the chance between the posts. In addition, the guests were missing an important cog in the injured Tesfaldet Tekie – who was replaced by Fredrik Hammar.

After five minutes of play, Jusef Erabi fell in a running duel with Gustaf Lagerbielke – who was awarded the match’s first warning. On the ensuing free-kick, former Elfsborg defender Simon Strand had a dangerous finish for Hammarby, but Hakon Valdimarsson was able to steer to the corner.

13 minutes into the game, Elfsborg’s Jeppe Okkels successfully challenged from the edge and got to the end – on which Blazevic released an extremely cheap rebound. In exactly the right place, Sveinn Gudjohnsen stayed in front and could easily send in 1-0 to the home team.

After the goal, the pace at Borås’ arena slowed down a bit, but after just over half an hour the visitors would get a feel for the net. Montader Madjed extended nicely to August Mikkelsen, who finished in the end.

Soon came the next heavy blow for Bajen. Edvin Kurtulus was hit and tried to play on, but eventually sat down and was forced to throw in the towel. Substitution – and the centre-back star was replaced by Viktor Djukanovic.

1-0 ended the half. Despite the result, Hammarby’s Fredrik Hammar was satisfied with what his team performed.

– I think we do a lot of good things. We can’t concede such an easy goal, but I think we still run well afterwards. The last five to eight minutes, I think we come up well, so I think it looks good, Hammar told Discovery+.

The green and whites went hard for an equalizer when August Mikkelsen again had the opportunity, but Hakon Valdimarsson remained on the podium.

In the 63rd minute, Elfsborg had a hyper-dangerous opportunity to extend it to 2-0 when Niklas Hult lifted a cross that Sveinn Gudjohnsen put his forehead on – but hit the post.

Instead, it took until the 86th minute before Johan Larsson punctuated the match by making it 2-0, which stood the match out.

– I think it is a mistake to talk about last season. In this team we have seven players who played in the first division. We know we are not where we want to be. I didn’t come to Hammarby to be in this situation, but now it is. We want to come up with something more. I want to focus on what we can do better from here. The goal is to win the next match at home against Sirius, says Baj coach Marti Cifuentes to Discovery+.

– There is always pressure and expectations. I came to Hammarby to play in Europe, now we are far from the top positions. My job is to take responsibility. Hammarby is a fantastic club to play for and together we need to create that environment. Hopefully we can win the next game.

At the press conference, Cifuentes develops his thoughts.

– We play a complete game against a good opponent, but today we make two mistakes in our own box, which costs us the game.

Next, IF Elfsborg visit Kalmar FF. Hammarby are away against IK Sirius.
