In southwestern Iceland, a volcano has erupted near a village that was evacuated weeks ago due to the impending danger. Magma is rising from a crack in the earth’s crust of about 3.5 kilometers, reports the Icelandic Weather Institute.

Huge lava fountains have formed, turning the sky orange-red. Authorities have urged Icelanders to stay at home and not watch the eruption.

Experts had been expecting an eruption for some time. In November, all almost 4,000 residents of the fishing village of Grindavik had to leave their homes. A nearby spa had already been evacuated a few days earlier. Seismologists had seen a magma tunnel slowly working its way to the surface, but they could not predict when an eruption would occur.

The eruption is in an uninhabited area a few kilometers from Grindavik. The weather agency says it appears the magma is moving southwest, toward the village.
