No one will step down from the elite group of the Under-20 World Hockey Championships in Canada.
The International Hockey Federation (IIHF) Council decided on this shortly before the start of the Edmonton and Red Deere tournaments. The Belarusians have already won the promotion from the lower category, and eleven teams will play at the MSJ in Russia next year.

According to the IIHF, the reason is sports integrity and fair competition, which was also unusually affected at this year’s World Championships in Canada by the circumstances surrounding the coronavirus pandemic. At the recent A-Group I. Division tournament, the juniors of Belarus have already advanced to the elite category, and the IIHF announced in a short communiqué that up to eleven teams will play at MSJ 2023. A year later, at MSJ 2024, the elite category will again have ten participants.
In this context, the IIHF will open a discussion on the implementation of logistical requirements in connection with the organization of the 2023 Championship in the Russian cities of Novosibirsk and Omsk for eleven teams. The issue of creating a match program will be dealt with by the IIHF Competition Commission. The portal hockeyslovakia.sk informed about it.
