I consider it a great honor to play alongside Marta

  • 22-year-old Ary is shining in the ranks of Brazil

  • She shares with us her admiration for Lionel Messi and games alongside Marta

  • Ary also comments on the competition between Palmeiras and Corinthians

“She dances even more than Michael Jackson.”

Ary Borges certainly wrote this post on TikTok with a wink and added a fun emoji to her video of her dancing to funk tunes, but lately the 22-year-old playmaker has actually been dancing as much as the ‘King of Pop ” at its best in the “Thriller Era”. That phase is still the most influential and commercially successful period in music history. Ary has also celebrated enormous success in the last six months.

The music-loving player from the Brazilian state of Maranhão has long been a celebrity on social media. On the pitch, dances by opposing defenses and celebration dances to celebrate goals have increased greatly. Ary made her debut for Brazil in September, scored three goals in the league final and was voted player of the tournament when she claimed her first title with Palmeiras in November. In the same month, she scored her first goals in Brazil’s jersey, lifted her first trophy with her country and assisted in December French Tournament in all three games in the starting XI for Pia Sundhage’s side, always flashing her genius.

Ahead of her return flight from Paris to Sao Paulo on Wednesday night, Ary spoke to FIFA about her breakthrough on the football stage, her admiration for Lionel Messi, playing alongside the legendary Marta, Brazil’s World Cup dream and the rivalry between Palmeiras and Corinthians.

FIFA: Can you tell us where your admiration for Lionel Messi comes from and is it true that you keep getting involved in rather heated Messi-Ronaldo comparison debates? Ari Borges: When I started watching football a little more intensely, I always watched videos of Ronaldinho Gaucho when he was at Barcelona. I thought it was really cool how well Ronaldinho and Messi played together. I started following all Barcelona matches and eventually fell in love with Messi’s football. He became my biggest idol. The Messi and Cristiano thing is something my friends and I always joke about. This is one of the topics that keeps coming up. I’m a big Cristiano Ronaldo fan, he’s an outstanding player, but I’m obsessed with Messi, so I’ll always defend him against Cristiano Ronaldo!

In recent months you have established yourself as a regular player in the Selection established. So you must be pretty happy with your performance?
Yes I am. I got this chance from Pia. The team is currently in a transition phase. I try to make the best of it and work hard every day to keep getting nominated.

How did you have Formigas farewell game in the Selection experienced?
That was a great experience. Formiga is a legend, not just in Brazilian football but in women’s football as a whole. It was an honor to be a part of this unforgettable day. It was a significant day for women’s football – a very special day, and it was also special for me because I scored my first goal in the Selection have achieved.

Speaking of legends, what’s it like playing alongside Marta?
(laughs) It was a dream when I first played alongside Marta and it’s still a dream. When you think of Brazil’s national team, the first thing that comes to mind is Marta. She’s a great personality and a great player. I am very happy that I can share the field with her and spend time with her. That’s a great honor. I’m really happy that I have this nice time with her in the Selection may experience. It’s just a dream.

Marta also has the French Tournament shined again. Brazil drew with the Netherlands, narrowly lost 2-1 to France and drew 0-0 with Finland. How do you rate the course of the tournament?
the Selection is in a transition phase. As with any transition phase, the beginning is a little difficult, it takes time. But we are learning better and better what Pia expects from us tactically, we are developing further. I think we played quite well against very strong national teams. Of course we really wanted to win the title, but I think we really learned a lot and our performances showed that we’re on the right track.

The tournament saw Brazil field a number of players from the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2018, who recently made the leap to the Selection have made it: yourself, Geyse, Kerolin, Angelina and Ana Vitoria…
That was really cool for all of us. We also talked a lot about it among ourselves. I have very fond memories of this U-20 World Cup. It was a great experience. It was the last junior tournament that we played together. Now we were together again in France. I am very thankful to be with the Selection am in and part of this transition.

How badly do you dream of playing at the World Cup?
That is of course the biggest dream. But let’s think short-term first. The Copa America is fast approaching and we need wins to earn a place at the World Cup. Of course, it would be a dream come true to wear the jersey of the World Cup Selection to wear.

Palmeiras has made a big splash in the transfer market, signing seven players including Bea Zaneratto and Andressinha. What do you think of the club’s commitments?
I think we’ve added even more strength to our already great team. This season is of enormous importance for Palmeiras. We have the Copa Libertadores, the Brasileiro Championship and the Paulista Championship ahead of us. We have a very busy schedule and therefore needed newcomers. Also, it’s the top players that really raise the level of the team. We want to get back to the finals and, God willing, win trophies this year.

The Corinthians won the three 2021 tournaments you mentioned and recently beat Palmeiras en route to the Supercopa do Brasil title. Can Palmeiras turn the tables this year?
I think these are two great teams. But football is quite unpredictable. Corinthians are an excellent team, of course we know that. But we worked towards beating them. We got great signings. I think we’re better than last year. We are in a transition phase, but we will give everything we have.

What are your thoughts on Palmeiras’ performance at the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2021™?I cheered on the team very passionately. I think every Palmeiras fan feels like this: I’m really proud of the team. When you play against a team as big as Chelsea and give them such a tough game, there’s something to be proud of. It almost ended in our favor. The players did their best and made us all very proud to be Palmeiras fans.

Speaking of pride: How proud are you of yourself, of where you come from and of your successes?
I’m very proud. When I was ten years old, I could never have imagined getting to where I am now. i do what i love I represent a big club in my country and I wear the shirt of the Selection. I think ‘pride’ is exactly the word that best sums it all up. I fulfill my dreams.

Finally, this question: Who do you think is the best player in the world?(laughs) I could make it easy on myself and say Marta. She’s my teammate and of course she’s right at the top. But I think other players are shining at the moment. The best of all? Hmmm, I have to think (stops)… Miedema. She’s having another great season. Right now she would get my vote.
