Hyundai will continue to develop hydrogen propulsion and internal combustion engines

Recent rumors from the Korean media that Hyundai has closed its internal combustion engine development center and also stopped developing hydrogen powertrains have proved untrue. The carmaker Hyundai stated this for the Motor1.com website.

“Hyundai Motor Group can confirm that it does not stop the development of internal combustion engines, as some media speculate. The group is committed to offering a strong portfolio of powertrains to customers around the world, which includes a combination of highly efficient motors and emission-free electric motors, ”wrote Michael Stewart of Hyundai’s US division.

The carmaker has announced that it wants to sell only electric cars in Europe since 2035. Until then, it will also offer cars with internal combustion engines. These engines need to be modified to meet the strict Euro 7 emissions standard, which is due to enter into force in 2025.

In 2040, Hyundai only wants to sell electric cars in most major markets in the world. Even then, however, its sales should not only consist of electric cars – electric cars with batteries and hydrogen fuel cells should then account for 80 percent of the brand’s global sales.
