Hyundai fined $ 54 million for defective motors – Motor

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identified a design defect in Hyundai Motor’s Theta II engines back in 2017. The problem turned out to be global: over 1.5 million Hyundai (Sonata, Santa Fe, Tucson) and Kia (Optima, Sorento, Sportage) were recalled.

The Korean concern had to replace problem engines on all cars free of charge, and the service campaign formally ended only now. In addition to the costs of fixing the defect and compensating the owners, Hyundai will be forced to pay a $ 54 million fine and invest $ 40 million in production upgrades. If the NHTSA finds Hyundai is in breach of the agreement, the fine will increase from $ 54 million to $ 100 million.
