The disease that affects the metabolism in the body has a treatment and habits to manage it

Hypothyroidism is a very common disease and attacks the majority of the world population, it is a disease that has various origins and can appear at any age, exclusively for the journal Medicine and Public Health (MSP), Dr. Jorge de Jesús, doctor Endocrinologist places great emphasis on this disease, how it can be treated, how it should be treated in different patients, its causes, risk factors and what measures a patient should take to cope with the disease.

“The thyroid is a gland that is located under the Adam’s apple, it has a butterfly shape and controls all the functions of the metabolism, it also influences the nervous system, the cardiovascular system, the gastrointestinal system and skeletal muscle. It greatly influences not only the peripheral nervous system but also in the central nervous system specifically in memory and concentration, the gland produces the thyroid hormone which is in charge of various functions “added the doctor

Hypothyroidism

The disease occurs when the thyroid gland does not secrete the adequate amount of hormones, this condition has several causes, one of them is autoimmunity as occurs in Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, another is when the gland is removed due to a tumor and, Finally, due to radioactive iodine treatment, the patient ends up suffering from hypothyroidism.

In the case of infants, the child can be born without the production of hormones and this is called congenital hypothyroidism, it can also appear in adolescence and adulthood.

The disease is more common in women, directly affecting their fertility and ovulation, in the state of pregnancy due follow-up is necessary since there are specific hormone levels that allow the correct development of the baby, likewise 24% of postmenopausal women they have the disease.

Symptoms

Many of the patients suffering from hypothyroidism present some symptoms such as increased pressure, lack of mood, memory loss, the functioning of the cardiovascular and gastrointestinal systems can slow down, the absorption of vitamins B12 is also altered because it does not It is optimal for the proper functioning of the body, which damages the system and can cause other diseases such as megaloblastic anemia. Calcium absorption is also affected, in addition other consequences arise such as fluid retention and loss of muscle strength.

“Many of the people believe that obesity is a direct factor in hypothyroidism, it is very important that this relationship be broken since the weight of a patient with the alteration of the thyroid gland has no influence.

Obesity is completely independent of the disease, there are some cases that due to fluid retention as mentioned above, patients may experience weight gain, but it is not directly related to this factor, ”said the specialist.

Treatment

As a first measure, it should be borne in mind that discipline is a primary factor for all treatment of this disease, the daily implementation of the medication must be controlled, as well as the dose, which varies according to the weight and age of the patient. For older patients, medication tends to decrease, since a high dose can affect the appearance of other diseases.

The application of doses should be proportional to the production of thyroid hormone (TSH), if this requirement is omitted, underlying conditions such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular problems and alterations in the central nervous system could appear.

Habits and diet are also very important, the pill because it replaces the function of the gland, it should be taken half an hour before breakfast or also three hours after dinner, it is important to regulate its consumption and not mix it with other foods (soy, calcium, iodine and even the consumption of biotin harm TSH tests) but give it an operating time so that it does not affect it.

The therapeutic margin is narrow, since the thyroid gland can have several types of changes due to its sensitivity to medications, it is very important that a single brand be handled, as well as the laboratory that is responsible for making the tablets, with in order that the patient does not suffer from any hormonal change, which can influence the functions of the thyroid gland.

It is very important to know about the factors covered by the disease, since it not only affects the metabolism of patients, but can also harm other parts of the body such as the central nervous system in babies, growth in children and adolescents and problems with fertility and in other systems as mentioned above.
