Hydro-Québec finalizes its contract with New York

After several weeks of negotiations, Hydro-Quebec reached an agreement on Tuesday with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) for the delivery of hydroelectricity to the American city.

The contract, signed by both parties, has been submitted to the New York State Public Service Commission for approval and will be subject to public consultation until February 7, 2022.

The Champlan Hudson Power Express (CHPE) line, 545 km long and buried end to end, will deliver 1,250 megawatts of clean, renewable hydroelectricity to the city in the Northeastern United States.

According to NYSERDA, the state’s carbon emissions will decrease by 37 million tonnes with this line, the equivalent of more than half a million cars on the roads. Economic benefits of US $ 3.5 billion for the people of New York are also expected.

“It is an honor for us to participate in the ambitious plan designed to supply the New York metropolis with clean and reliable energy and thus to strengthen our collaboration with the State of New York, which has lasted for a century,” said said Hydro-Quebec’s president and director, Sophie Brochu, in a press release on Tuesday.

“This structuring project is part of an unprecedented program that will help the metropolis and the State of New York to reduce their use of fossil fuels while creating societal benefits of several billion dollars, as well as considerable investments and thousands of jobs, benefiting all New Yorkers, ”said NYSERDA President and CEO Doreen M. Harris.

In Quebec, the approximately 60 kilometers of underground lines planned between La Prairie and Lacolle will require investments of “hundreds of millions of dollars”, according to what Hydro Quebec told “Journal de Montreal” last September.
