In the same group, David Popovic (Romania), who won the 100m and 200m freestyle at the World Championships in long course (50m) this year, took first place (6th overall) with a time of 1:42 :31. Tom Dean (Great Britain), who won the gold medal in the 200m freestyle at the Tokyo Olympics last year, cleared the water in 1:40:98 in the 5th group and easily made it to the final with the first place overall. Hwang Seon-woo won his first major tournament gold medal with a best time of 1:41:60 at the 15th event held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) in December last year.
Hwang Seon-woo’s best record in this event was an Asian record of 1:40:99 set in the men’s 800m relay final held on the 16th, two days earlier. At that time, Korea continued the race in the order of Hwang Seon-woo, Kim Woo-min (21, Gangwon Provincial Office), Lee Ho-jun (21, Daegu Metropolitan City Office), and Yang Jae- hoon (24, Gangwon Provincial Office), setting a new Korean record of 6 minutes 49 seconds 67, the first runner.
