Hurricane Henri: crowd of outdoor concert in New York invited to leave

NEW YORK – Crowds at a multi-star concert in Central Park have been urged to leave due to inclement weather as Hurricane Henri approaches.

The concert was intended to celebrate New York City’s recovery from the coronavirus

On Saturday night, New York City Police asked spectators via Twitter to “move calmly to the nearest exits and to areas outside the park,” adding that “This is NOT an emergency. ”

Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office did not provide any further information regarding the concert.

The highly promoted “Homecoming Concert” featured Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Jennifer Hudson, Carlos Santana, LL Cool J and Andrea Bocelli, among others.

Saturday’s event was preceded by a series of hip-hop concerts last week at venues outside the city.

The concert kicked off amid concerns about the Delta variant.

Over the past week, New York City recorded an average of just under 2,000 new cases of COVID-19 per day, according to state statistics. There were just under 200 cases per day at the end of June. Only 54% of all city residents are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Those attending the concert, most of whose tickets were distributed free of charge, had to show proof of vaccination.
