Hungary’s anti-LGBTQ+ law faces opposition from EU leaders and human rights groups

While the Hungarian cabinet justifies the norm as an effort to protect children, human rights groups call it discriminatory and most EU leaders have condemned it. EC President Ursula von der Leyen called him “shameful”.

According to the European Commission, the standard violates several EU provisions. “The protection of children is an absolute priority for the EU and its member states. However, the Hungarian law contains measures that are not justified within the framework of the promotion of this fundamental interest or are disproportionate to the achievement of the set goal,” the commission said last year. According to her, the law violates the fundamental rights of EU citizens as well as the rules of the Union’s internal market.

Last year, the European Commission turned to the Court of Justice of the European Union regarding the Hungarian law, reminds Reuters. According to the German government, 14 EU member states have so far joined the proceedings: Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Denmark, Portugal, Ireland, Spain, Malta, Austria, Sweden, Slovenia, Finland and now France and Germany.

Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský on Twitter on Wednesday informed, that the Czech Republic will not join the European lawsuit against the Hungarian law. According to information from ČTK, the government discussed the matter. “I regret that the Czech Republic will not join the European lawsuit against the Hungarian anti-LGBTQI+ law. But we in the Pirate Party are not going to give up on this topic. Children are not threatened by seeing such characters on TV or in books. They are threatened by artificial incitement of hatred or concealment of information,” wrote Lipavský.

The EU institutions have been in a long-standing dispute with Hungary over the observance of European values. They consider restrictions on the independence of the judiciary, the media, or attacks against non-governmental organizations or sexual minorities to be problematic.
