Hungary postpones the vote on the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO

Orbán said in a radio interview on February 24 that Hungary will send parliamentary delegations to Sweden and Finland to clarify these issues before a vote can take place in the parliament.

The delay since July 2022 has caused dissatisfaction in the European Union, as well as in the Hungarian opposition.

Speaking in the Hungarian Parliament on Wednesday, liberal lawmaker and former State Secretary of the Ministry of Defense Ágnes Vadai criticized the ruling Fidesz party for repeatedly postponing the vote.

“It could have been a quick and easy matter in the Hungarian parliament, but it wasn’t. It wasn’t like that, because there was always some excuse or delaying tactic from the ruling party,” said the deputy, adding that sending a parliamentary delegation to Sweden and Finland is “the latest trick to postpone” the vote.

Apart from Hungary, only Turkey has not yet officially supported the applications of Finland and Sweden for admission to NATO.
