Hungary Gets First Russian Corona Vaccine in EU | Voice of America

Hungary is the first member of the European Union (EU) to start vaccination against the new coronavirus from Russia.

Hungarian medical officials said at a press conference on the 12th that “Sputnik V vaccination has begun,” and added that “it is in progress at the designated location.”

‘Sputnik V’was developed in Russia and approved for the first time in the world in August of last year, but the efficacy and safety were controversial.

The Hungarian government approved vaccines from Sputnik V and Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinoparm last month, saying that the EU’s vaccine approval and procurement is slow.

Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban said in a radio interview on the 12th, “If you wait for the EU, 100 Hungarians will be killed every day.”

Therefore, it said that the distribution of vaccines made in China will be carried out sooner or later, and that all registered persons can receive the vaccine before Easter.

Currently, the number of people enrolled in the corona vaccine is approaching 2.5 million, Orban explained.

This figure represents about a quarter of the total population of Hungary, close to 10 million.
