Hungarian official: companies may require COVID-19 vaccine

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) – The Hungarian government will allow private companies to require their employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of work as infections and deaths in the country reach levels not seen since the devastating rebound. of the pandemic last spring.

At a government press conference on Thursday, the prime minister’s chief of staff, Gergely Gulyas, announced that the central government will also choose to require the vaccine from public officials, but mayors will be able to decide whether to apply the rule in their municipalities.

The use of a mask in public transport will be mandatory from Monday, and non-essential visits to public health institutions will be prohibited, Gulyas added.

The measures coincide with a significant increase in COVID-19 infections, hospitalizations and deaths. On Thursday 4,039 new cases were registered – the worst figure since mid-April and almost double that of the previous week – and 45 deaths, an unprecedented figure since May.

The vaccination requirement to work could boost the campaign, which has been stalled for months with skepticism.
