In several cities in the United States, people have taken to the streets to speak out for the right to abortion. Tens of thousands of people have come to the more than 600 demonstrations.
The reason is a new law that has been passed in the state of Texas. This is considered the strictest abortion law in the US and forbids women to terminate their pregnancy if a heartbeat is detectable, which is often possible after six weeks. Most women do not yet know that they are pregnant.
Also this month, the Supreme Court is reviewing the Mississippi state anti-abortion law. A ruling in that case could set a precedent for other states. Protesters fear the overwhelmingly conservative court will limit the right to abortion. The verdict will follow next year.
