Humberto Cota Burgueño: A Respected San Luis Lawyer and Teacher to New Generations of Law Students

Humberto Cota Burgueño is one of the most respected San Luis lawyers in the entire legal community of this border, since, in addition to exercising his work as a litigator, he has been the teacher of the new generations of law students who have come from different schools of the city.

Interviewed in his offices, the lawyer recalled his beginnings, once he graduated in 1980 from the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC).

“In the first years of litigation, I was in the office of lawyer Ramón Gastélum, for two or three years, whenever he is fresh out of school, one leans on other colleagues, and when I considered that I could fly by myself, I did my office, which has been the same for more than 40 years”.

He added that the work environment for lawyers has changed radically, from the 1980s to date, as an example is the new oral justice system, which has been implemented for a relatively short time, and which has revolutionized the legal field in Mexico.

He expressed that all lawyers, of whatever age they are, have to update themselves, because you never know when some law or regulation is going to change, and they have to be up to date with the movements that are made.

He indicated that the Bar Association is made up of a group of professionals in the field, and among all of them they update and provide feedback, so that the community has a decent service from the litigants.

Practically since he graduated from the degree, he began his stage as a teacher, that is, he began to give classes, to prepare the new generations of lawyers, this at the CUT, where he retired in 2015.

He regretted that there is not enough market for all the number of lawyers who graduate every six months from the different universities in the city, since it is estimated that there are at least one hundred.

“Unfortunately, San Luis is too small for us to accommodate all the lawyers who graduate, on the one hand, it’s good that many leave, but the bad thing is that, before society, we have a bad impression.”

He said that the new generation of lawyers have prepared very well, including those who work with him in his office, were his students and are continually studying.

“Now they are the ones who ‘teach’ me, there is a lot of feedback between us, Law is a career that has evolved enormously, we have to be at the forefront, I feel that lawyers have to do that, to provide a good service to community”.
