Hui He, a Soprano from the Silk Road: Uniting Ancient Civilizations through Music

A musical road movie set between the great Western opera houses and the Chinese cities of Xi’an, Ankang and Beijing: it is the docu-film “Hui He, a Soprano from the Silk Road” broadcast on Thursday 12 October at 9.15pm on first seen on Rai 5. A human and cultural journey that tells how the universal force of music unites two very ancient and distant civilizations, as the “Silk Road” once did. Not a biopic on a great opera singer, but a creative mosaic documentary where some elements of Hui He’s story build a path of understanding the relationship between the West and China. Hui He is today the flagship of a China that also wants to establish itself in the world of Western music. For the public, Hui He is an excellent key to understanding the nature of Chinese identity: the sense of honor, tenacity, ambition and absolute self-sacrifice towards one’s goals. The parable of the girl who left Xi’an is a fitting metaphor for the new approach called “The new Silk Road”, the ambitious government project that wants to rebuild the ancient cultural and economic bridge between China and Europe.
