((INTRO))
The “Lone Star” or “Lone Star” initiative in Texas has been criticized by organizations like Human Right Watch, which is now calling for federal action to stop what it calls an abusive and discriminatory measure. Laura Sepúlveda, a correspondent for the Voice of America in Texas, expands on the story.

The creation of the Lone Star strategy, or Lone Star, by its name in English, was created according to Governor Abbott of Texas because, and we quote: “The crisis on our southern border continues to escalate due to the policies of the Biden Administration that are they refuse to secure the border and invite illegal immigration ”.

This measure, launched in March 2021 by the current local administration, is producing results that litigants and organizations such as Human Rights Watch are warning about.

“More than 1500 people have been arrested so far, mostly on misdemeanors, trespassing charges, but these charges are not brought to court, so… what is happening is a kind of arrest. systematic targeting that keeps people in really difficult conditions and without charges, that would only be justified as a way of targeting migrants as criminals. ”

((Laura Sepúlveda, Voice of America))
[00:51 – 01:05]
According to the statutes of the state of Texas, every individual has the right to legal representation and according to article 26.04 said lawyer must be assigned within three business days after the request made by the accused.

“For that reason, Human Rights Watch is urging the Department of Justice to intervene in Texas, either to request the courts to stop this operation, to open an investigation to purge what constitutes something called the pattern or practice of violations of civil rights ”.

So far and after the alert raised by the organization, there has been no pronouncement by the federal government. For now, migrants are urged to know their rights to demand that they be respected in any legal process they have to face.
