To encourage more young people in North Limburg to get an HPV vaccination, the Kankerpraat Foundation has launched two podcast episodes. The episodes are a collaboration with GGD Limburg-Noord.
22 percent of young people in North Limburg have now been vaccinated against HPV. The vast majority of young people have not yet. This must still be achieved through the collaboration between the Kankerpraat Foundation and GGD Limburg-Noord. This concerns young people between 18 and 27 years old who are eligible for the free HPV vaccination until June 1, 2024. After June 1, the costs are 200 euros per injection. To be fully protected, a person must be injected twice and there must be at least five months between both injections. In order to be vaccinated completely free of charge, it is important to get the first shot before December 31 of this year.

The human papillomavirus, better known as HPV, is a virus that can cause cancer. Cervical cancer is one of those cancers, but cancer around the penis, anus, labia, vagina, mouth and throat can also be caused by HPV. You get the virus through sexual or intimate contact. Almost everyone gets an HPV infection at some point, both men and women. The body usually clears away this virus and causes little damage, but it can also lead to (precancerous) cancer. The vaccination offers protection for this.

The Kankerpraat Foundation and the accompanying podcast are an initiative of Ken Driessen together with two friends. Driessen is a cancer patient himself and wants to use the foundation to bring other young patients into contact with fellow sufferers. He previously told his story for Omroep Venlo. The podcast now releases two special episodes about the importance of the HPV vaccination for young people.
