How Your Taxes Can Make a Difference: Cáritas Receives Over 24 Million Euros for Social Programs Through Tax Allocation

The confederal network of Cáritas received in 2022 more than 24.4 million euros of the tax allocation. These funds were allocated to different programs related to the accompaniment of people and families in vulnerable situations. Among them, projects of reception and assistance, family, childhood and youth, the elderly, homeless people and housing stand out.

Since 2017, the funds assigned by taxpayers through the Social Interest Activities box, known as the ‘X Solidaria’, are distributed to Third Sector organizations through a public call for subsidies in a double tranche system. -and that NGOs allocate entirely to specific projects, not to their structures-. The Autonomous Communities are in charge of allocating 80% of these resources, while the State is responsible for distributing the remaining 20%.

“The solidarity of Spanish taxpayers through the tax allocation boxes allows Cáritas to launch hundreds of social projects every year, since, as an entity of the third sector of social action, it obtains funds through the box of ” other social purposes” and also the box for the Catholic Church, as it is the official confederation of charitable and social action entities of the Church in Spain”, he explains. edward lopezfrom the Awareness and Communication team at Cáritas Española.

“In this way, -he adds- the taxpayer can multiply their solidarity by contributing 1.4% of their taxes both to the support of the Church and to social purposes. This simple gesture does not mean paying more or that you will be returned less in the result of your declaration.

Last spring, 53% of taxpayers checked the income solidarity box, exceeding 11.7 million people. However, there are still 47% who do not, either because they only check the box for the Catholic Church or because they do not check any. Leaving these boxes of the tax allocation blank means that a significant part of the Personal Income Tax (IRPF) collection goes directly to the State coffers each year, instead of being used for social purposes or the maintenance of church.

During the presentation of the X Solidaria campaign, the Social Action NGO Platform (POAS) recalled that if all taxpayers checked the box for other social purposes, third sector organizations could have received about 704 this year million euros instead of the 425 that they obtained from the tax allocation, according to the balance of the provisional data provided by the Treasury.

“By checking both boxes -Eduardo López highlights- we can support hundreds of care projects for people in situations of poverty and exclusion, and, at the same time, the important pastoral and liturgical work carried out by the Catholic Church in Spain”.

On the occasion of the start of the 2023 Income campaign and with the aim of continuing to promote a more just, inclusive and egalitarian society, Cáritas has launched the initiative “It costs nothing to help X two” to invite society to mark the two boxes.

In this Income statement, think about it, “it doesn’t cost anything to help X two”.
