One smartphone, two SIM cards

First, let’s take a look at the dual-sim smartphone. You can put two SIM cards in it.

Most such models that you will find on the market are so-called standby dual SIM devices. They only have one antenna. In other words: you can be reached on both numbers, as long as you don’t call, surf or text yourself. If you do, you will use that one antenna with the first SIM card and you will not be reachable via the second SIM card.

Active dual-SIM smartphones, on the other hand, have two antennas. It is, as it were, two physical telephones in one. Thanks to the two antennas, you can always be reached on both SIM cards, whatever you do. Moreover, you can easily and at will disable the SIM cards. Attention: such smartphones are more expensive, because it is more difficult to combine two antennas in one device. Moreover, that extra antenna takes up more space.

No physical SIM card

… That is also an option if you choose a smartphone with an eSIM. Such an eSIM is a digital SIM card that is part of your phone. You can combine different subscriptions and telephone numbers without having to insert physical SIM cards into your smartphone. So no more hassle with a needle or paper clip.

Moreover, an eSIM is very safe, because you cannot steal or lose it. And if you buy a new smartphone with eSIM, you don’t have to wait until you receive a SIM card. The activation is done completely online.

The number of providers with eSIM subscriptions used to be limited, but today the major telecom players support the digital SIM card, such as Proximus and Orange. Telenet does not yet support eSIM on smartphones, but it already does on smartwatches. After all, an eSIM takes up less space, making it easy to fit in a smartwatch. As a result, you can receive mobile phone calls on it, without having to have your smartphone in your pocket. Which in itself is extra handy, for example during sports.
