We will explain how reply messages on Instagram, including the option to reply to a specific message with a quote. Instagram offers many options, and even its direct messages (DM) section contains some secrets.
A long time ago we collected the tricks to put links on Instagram Stories without having 10,000 followers, and now we will focus on the private messages, which are increasingly used to the detriment of WhatsApp.
How to view Instagram Stories without having an Instagram account
We will go from the most specific cases to the most general ones, solving the doubts that arise about how to respond to the messages we have received on Instagram from other users.
Reply to specific messages with a quote
We start with the most complicated case, and the one that arouses the most doubts: responding to a specific message in a chat, so that the original text appears in a quote, and make it clear exactly which part of the conversation we reply to.
It is one of the new functions after the merger of Instagram with Facebook Messenger, but for now few people have it available. The company offers it to a small number of users, as part of its tests, and if we are lucky a pop-up message will give us the option to “Update” to the new version:
At least for now no way to force the processEven those who use the Instagram beta are not sure that they will see the option to reply to a specific message.
If we are among the chosen ones, the steps to do so are the following:
- To reply to messages by means of a quote (“quote” in English) is it is essential that the Facebook Messenger conversation bubble appears (instead of the icon of the paper plane), on which we must press:
- About the message that interests us (including photos or videos) we hold down until a menu opens and there we choose “Responder” to start typing:
- The result will be that our new message will have a box on top with the text, photo or video to which it responds, so that there is no doubt what we mean.
In general, these quotes on Instagram to answer a specific message bring a lot of order, especially if we need to refer to a much earlier fragment of the conversation.
Reply from the notification bar
A comfortable system to reply to messages is send the text directly from the notification bar, so that we do not need to enter Instagram, and we do not deconcentrate from the task we are doing.
Not everyone knows about this option, although it has been available from Android 7 Nougat (released in 2016) and from iOS 9.1 (from 2015), so practically all current mobiles support it.
So we can use it:
- In the notification appears a button “Reply” (either when it arrives or when the bar is displayed), where we must press:
- We will get a box to write the text, and the touch keyboard will be activated in the lower area of the screen, but without leaving the application in which we were:
- We just have to write the text and click on the right arrow to send it:
This way it will be simple have a conversation without even entering Instagram, although we can always click on the notification to access if we need to see all the chat and remember what we were talking about.
Respond from the app itself
The simplest and most basic method, which is access Instagram to reply when someone talks to us. We will indicate the steps for those who are starting the application:
- First we enter Instagram in a normal way, by clicking on the app icon:
- We will click on the messages icon, top right, which can be shaped like a paper plane or a speech bubble:
- A list of chats (individual or group) that are in development, we have to choose the one to which we want to respond:
- Now we will play on the box to enter text, the virtual keyboard will appear and we will write the message, once ready, all you have to do is click on “Submit”:
Stranger messages and double tray
When it comes to replying to Instagram messages, there are a couple of special cases which are worth mentioning, as they are often confusing the first time we meet them.
The first is messages from strangers on Instagram, which come from people we don’t follow and sometimes they are advertising spam. They appear at the top of the message list, indicating “X requests” depending on the number that we have pending:
Upon entering we will see the list of conversations to approve, and we get the options of “Accept”, “Delete” and Block “:
If we choose “Accept” will become a standard conversation, and we will be able to reply to the messages. With “Delete” the conversation will disappear and it will no longer be shown as pending, although that account will be able to speak to us again if it wishes.
On the other hand, by choosing “Block” we will not receive any more messages from that person, and we can inform Instagram that they are spamming (unwanted advertising).
On the other hand, some users have a double mailbox divided into “Main” and “General” that keeps the messages more orderly. This happens if we have a creator account on Instagram (influencer, artist, celebrity or any professional), and also in company accounts.
The idea is that in the mailbox “Main” go the messages that are relevant to us and we want to respond in the usual way, while the messages in “General” do not send notifications, something important when managing accounts with many followers.
We already see that replying to messages on Instagram has some secrets, but in general it is quite simple, and private conversations have become a key element of the photography social network.
