“How to Properly Close the Frunk on Your Tesla: Avoid Damages and Mistakes”

While the tailgate on the Teslas has motors and can be opened and closed by itself with one push of the key, the button on the hatch or via the mobile phone, the front trunk – often called the “frunk” – is manual, so you have to close it with your own hands.

It is easy to make mistakes here, so that it gets damaged.

Do not use one hand

On the forum Tesla Motors Club there are several threads from people who have experienced that the hood is damaged after they, unknowingly, have tried to close the hood in the wrong way.

One mistake people make is to press down on the Tesla logo to close, but the Model S, E, X and Y digital instruction manual warns against doing this.

“The Model S hood is not heavy enough to lock under its own weight and could be damaged if pressure is applied to the front edge or center of the hood,” warns the Model S owner’s manual.

This also applies to Model X, Y and 3.

Do this

Instead, press with two hands; one on each side of the Tesla logo.

Tesla recommends the following procedure, which you can see in the picture below:

  • Lower the bonnet until the latch tab touches the latches.
  • Place both hands on the front of the hood in the areas shown (in green) and firmly press down to close the latches.
  • Try to gently lift the front edge of the hood to make sure it is fully closed.
