How to Prevent Syphilis Spread: Ministry of Health Urges Loyalty in Partners and Safe Sex Practices | Republika.co.id

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges people to be loyal to their partners and avoid risky sexual behavior. The goal is to prevent disease transmission syphilis widespread. The number of people with syphilis in Indonesia has increased by almost 70 percent in the last five years (2016-2022).

“I urge married couples to be loyal to their partners to avoid risky sex. For those who are not married, use protection to avoid things that can be risky for health and mental growth,” said spokesman for the Ministry of Health, Mohammad Syahril.

He reminded, diseases such as HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B are three dangerous sexually transmitted diseases that are transmitted directly from mother to child, occurring in the womb, during the birth process, or during breastfeeding. In Law Number 35 of 2014 concerning health in article 46 states that both the state, government, local government, families and parents are required to make sure that the child born is protected from diseases that threaten survival and/or cause disabilities.

The Ministry of Health strengthened the case tracking system syphilis or better known as lion king disease, to the farthest health facility in Indonesia. The Ministry of Health has opened access to Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) services to the periphery.

“The treatment for the STI program has reached the farthest health centers in Indonesia,” said the Ministry of Health’s Director of Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Imran Pambudi in Jakarta, Thursday (11/5/2023).

Responding to the Ministry of Health’s efforts to overcome syphilis, Imran explained that by opening access to the farthest health facility, his party is intensifying a number of trainings for STIs for health workers. In line with that, education and prevention with condoms are also encouraged through a campaign that is intensified by the Ministry of Health.

One of them that syphilis is great imitator because the symptoms of the infection can change like other diseases. For this reason, increasing knowledge and prevention is very necessary to detect cases early.

One of the STI services provided is in the form of HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B screening or what is called a program triple elimination in pregnant women. The program targets housewives and finds active cases in male sex customers with STI symptoms.

Imran explained, in other areas experiencing high syphilis transmission in key populations, where one of them is a man who has sex with men (MSM), partner notifications have been carried out in cases of syphilis. The Ministry of Health has also provided syphilis diagnostic tools along with medicines needed by patients in existing health facilities. In this case, it is a syphilis screening using rapid test standardized and the results are fast so that if a positive result is found it can be treated immediately.

“We also encourage the discovery and treatment of early cases, thereby reducing morbidity and transmission,” he said.

Imran explained, if the focus of the handling of the Ministry of Health is very comprehensive. Because his party is focusing on case finding by conducting early syphilis screening at the population level, especially vulnerable and high-risk populations.

“Finally, we are not only providing treatment, access to services, training for health facilities to the ends of Indonesia. But also the availability of drug logistics and syphilis testing kits,” he said.
