How to prevent Covid-19 transmission during independent isolation at home

KONTAN.CO.ID – Jakarta. The government asks people infected with the corona virus without symptoms to continue to isolate in hospitals or places that have been provided to prevent transmission of corona among family members. But if forced to isolate independently at home what?

People who are infected with the corona virus can carry out independent isolation at home without transmitting to other family members. To prevent transmission of corona among family members, everyone must pay attention to various provisions.

Thea van de Mortel, Professor, Nurse and Deputy Principal of the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Griffith University shared a number of tips on how to prevent transmission of corona at home via the Conversation page.

First of all, it is necessary to understand the distribution pattern of SARS-CoV-2 -virus caused by Covid-19. The virus can spread in several ways, namely:

  • An infected person breathes and then releases infected droplets through breathing, talking, coughing or sneezing.
  • An uninfected person touches a surface that has been contaminated with droplets from an infected person, then that person touches the mouth, nose or food. Viral particles can remain infected when they have been on surfaces for some time.
  • The tiny aerosol particles left in the air.

Now, living close to someone who has Covid-19 means thinking about ways to prevent corona transmission from each of the methods above. Here are five ways to prevent corona transmission at home.

1. Isolation and ventilation

Ideally, people with Covid-19 have their own room and bathroom to minimize contact with other people. If space is not available, they should keep their distance from other family members as much as possible.

Primarily, this needs to be applied to people who are more at risk, such as the elderly or people with weaker immune systems. In addition, the better the ventilation of the room, the lower the risk of transmission.

Weather permitting, open windows for air exchange. It is better if you close the door to the room of the infected person to minimize the movement of contaminated air in the house.

2. Personal hygiene

Everyone in the house – especially people infected with Covid-19, must implement good respiratory hygiene protocols. This can be done, among others, by covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze, and safely dispose of used tissues.

In addition, wash your hands regularly, especially before eating and after handling surfaces that you fear might be contaminated. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, using soap or a hand sanitizer with a minimum content of 60 percent alcohol.

The World Health Organization (WHO) calls on people infected with the corona to wear masks to reduce the spread of infected particles in the air and reduce the risk of transmission. People caring for patients should also wear a mask when entering an infected person’s room.

They also need to wear gloves if they come in contact with fluids from patients, such as vomit, feces or saliva. All contaminated waste, such as used tissues, masks and gloves, must be put in a special trash can. The bin must also be covered with plastic.

3. Avoid sharing

In order to reduce the risk of transmission through contaminated objects, avoid sharing personal items. For example, sharing toiletries, eating utensils, and others, with people with Covid-19. If you are going to use cutlery that was previously handled by a person with Covid-19, use gloves to pick it up.

Then, wash the appliance with hot water and detergent before using it again. Objects that cannot be washed can be wiped with a disinfectant.

The patient’s clothes or sheets should be washed using high temperatures. If you don’t have a washer dryer, leave the clothes in the sun to deactivate the virus.

4. Clean the surface

Surfaces that have been touched by someone with Covid-19 need to be washed daily using warm soapy water, followed by a disinfectant liquid. Pay extra attention to surfaces that are often shared, such as door handles, light switches, toilets, and so on.

If you use the same bathroom as a Covid-19 patient, that patient must clean and disinfect the bathroom before being used by other people.

5. Caring for people with Covid-19

If you are caring for someone who is infected with Covid-19, make sure they are eating nutritious food and drinking enough water. Keeping the body hydrated is very important, especially if the patient has a fever, to replace fluids lost through sweat.

People who are infected with the virus often feel exhausted as an immune response. It is therefore important to ask them to get plenty of rest.

Although fever is a natural way to fight infection, be prepared to provide anti-pyretic drugs such as paracetamol if needed to make the patient more comfortable. It is important to monitor the patient’s condition regularly and seek medical help if his condition worsens.

Finally, family members must be alert and ready if at any time they need to do tests if they experience Covid-19 symptoms, such as coughing or fever.

That is the way to prevent corona transmission at home if there are family members who are positive for corona. Stay alert and always wear a mask, wash your hands diligently, and keep your distance.
