William Hanson, etiquette expert and founder of The English Manner, says that politeness and subtlety don’t always work, although it’s the best place to start.

He says: “My tactic is to turn the conversation to the next day – ‘What are you going to do tomorrow?’ or, more specifically, ‘Do you have a very busy day tomorrow?'”

Think about the next day and hope they start to understand the time, he suggests. But if they’re friends and you really need to “get rid” of them, don’t be afraid to stand up and say, “I love you all so much and I’d like you to stay longer, but I have a really early start in the morning.”

Sometimes honesty is the best and most effective policy.

“If the host is sitting down, looking relaxed and not too concerned about refills, extra coffee or tea and things like that, then that’s probably a sure sign that the party is over.”
