How to instantly make any outfit look better

Many masterpieces and intriguing designs throughout history owe their visual appeal to what is known as the “golden ratio”.

The mathematical ratio of 1:1.618, also known as divine proportion, contributes to beauty, balance and harmony by arranging motifs along intersecting axes and aesthetically separating lines and shapes.

Aside from its widespread use in art, this mathematical concept is also widely used in fashion. Known for her impeccable style and keen eye for balance, Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel has been credited with saying, “Fashion is architecture: it’s a matter of proportion.”

Chanel’s opinion has been shared by many other fashion designers who adapt the golden ratio to balance proportions between garments and create stunning symmetry in their collections.

The rule of thirds

In fashion in particular, it is not easy to adhere exactly to the golden ratio of 1:1.618. Luckily, you can use the rule of thirds to achieve the same sense of balance and harmony. A ratio of 2:3 or 3:5, while not quite the divine ratio, is close enough for fashion designers.

Applying the rule of thirds to your everyday wardrobe makes every outfit seem cohesive and balanced. For example, a 2:3 upper to lower body ratio is a more natural visual division than a 1:1 ratio. The latter splits the body in half, resulting in a boxy, dowdy silhouette.

The easiest way to achieve this is to divide your body into thirds and create a visual break along one of those lines. This can be the point where the top and bottom meet, where a layer ends, or where you place a belt.

A quick way to use the rule of thirds is to tuck in the front of your shirt, a method known as a French tuck that instantly divides your outfit into 1/3 top and 2/3 bottom. For a similar effect, wear a crop top paired with high-rise pants.

Kate Middleton has always been the classic style icon and a master of the concept. The inclusion of a belt was a subtle but effective visual disruption in her striking teal midi dress, designed by Edeline Lee. It not only tightens her waist but also helps to elongate her figure.

For an inverted example of this concept, see Sarah Jessica Parker’s look at the Hocus pocus 2 world premiere. A pair of satin pink shorts (a style she is very fond of) helps balance the length of her long floral tunic.

In summary, incorporating the rule of thirds into your wardrobe can be a total style changer. Prepare to receive compliments like never before.
