How to change the default font in Windows 10 | Technology

Our Windows 10 computer has a default font, Segoe UI, and you’re probably used to it. However, you know but we can change it? We show you how with this reve tutorial.

In the Windows 10 configuration panel, the Fonts option appears and there we can see dozens of different fonts. Some of these fonts are going to sound like a lot to us because they are the same as we have in Word. But, we can not only use them in programs: you can also change the Windows font, its menus, buttons, etc.

All of this is what we will learn in this tutorial. Anyone, computer literate or not, will be able to change the font in Windows 10 after reading this tutorial.

Changing the font helps us in our task of personalizing our computer, going beyond just changing the wallpaper, the color of the windows or changing the location of the Windows 10 taskbar.

To change the default font of our Windows 10 computer, we must pay close attention to the following steps:

  • The font we currently have is Segoe UI, but if we enter Settings -> Personalization -> Fonts, we will see that there are dozens of different sources.
  • We choose the one we want, for example, Verdana and click on it.
  • The specific menu of that source opens with all its information.
  • Very important not to close that window.
  • Now we open Notepad and paste the following text as is:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionFonts]
“Segoe UI (TrueType)”=””
“Segoe UI Bold (TrueType)”=””
“Segoe UI Bold Italic (TrueType)”=””
“Segoe UI Italic (TrueType)”=””
“Segoe UI Light (TrueType)”=””
“Segoe UI Semibold (TrueType)”=””
“Segoe UI Symbol (TrueType)”=””

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionFontSubstitutes]
“Segoe UI” = “HERE-THE-NEW-SOURCE”

  • Just where it says “HERE-THE-NEW-SOURCE”, we remove that and leave the quotes, but we have to put the exact name of the font that we have chosen. In our case “Verdana”.
  • Now, without closing Notepad, click on File -> Save as -> We name the file followed by .reg -> In type of files we select All files -> Save.
  • We open the File Explorer and look for the one we just saved.
  • We click on it and a dialog box appears: Do you want to allow this application to make changes to the computer? Click on Yes.
  • A notice like the one shown below will appear and where we also have to click on Yes.
  • They inform us that the changes have been successfully added to the registry.
  • When we restart the computer the font will have changed.
  • If we want to return to the previous configuration we carry out the same process, but this time we have to copy this text as it is in Notepad:

The rest of the steps are the same. We can do and undo as many times as we want, but for the changes to be effective we must restart the computer.

Windows 10 has a lot of good things, but also a few that drive us crazy. We teach you how to deactivate them once and for all.

Other fonts and methods to change fonts in Windows 10

If the fonts that Windows 10 pre-installed do not convince us, we can download several from the web DaFont or from 1001 Free Fonts. And if we want to try the most readable font in the world, we can download Atkinson Hyper-readable.

If we do not want to mess with the Notepad out of fear or distrust, there is always install a third-party app to do it for us. On this occasion we recommend Advanced System Font Changer, which will do the same process that we have explained, but automatically each time we choose a new source.
