How Parrots Can Use Tablets for Stimulation and Enrichment

Anyone who has a parrot as a pet knows that they often need a lot of stimulation to thrive, and cannot just be left alone in their cage for long periods of time. Then parrots can become displeased and start plucking their own feathers as a result.

Parents know that tablets are sometimes the technological savior in times of need when children won’t listen or sit still.

Parrots can use tablets

Now a new study shows that tablets also work on parrots, who can get a lot of stimulation through the various programs and games.

Different birds have different needs, just like children like different things. However, many parrots seem to enjoy watching Youtube videos of other parrots. So one way to entertain our intelligent pets, like parrots, can be to give them limited screen time with a variety of games and apps.

“To prevent some of the boredom, games are useful – they love sounds, they love music, they love looking at things,” says Kurt Sladkyprofessor of zoological medicine at the University of Wisconsin till CNN.

Some researchers wanted to find out more about that behavior, so they started a study with a total of 20 parrots who had to play a game that consisted of punching holes in balloons on the tablets.

Stimulate the pets with limited screen time

The study will show the way how new, more bird-friendly games can be developed to stimulate our intelligent pets.

But just because a certain game works for your parrot, it’s important to remember that screen time is your responsibility and not the pet’s, says Irene Pepperberga professor at Boston University, who specializes in gray parrots.

“If you just leave the tablet in the cage for the birds, it’s the same as leaving a tablet with your toddler all day,” she says.
