Ian Fleming wrote several stories with James Bond as the protagonist but he is not the only author of the adventures of 007
The end of no time to die included the obligatory message of “James Bond will return» with which all the secret agent movies end, but little remains of the secret agent books. Throughout the 60-year cinematographic history of 007, the spy saga has used a combination of Fleming’s source material and original storylines to keep it relevant to contemporary audiences. After the end of the stage of Daniel CraigBond 26 will restart the series once again, and the producers of 007 will have to decide where the story of the next adventure will come from.
How many James Bond novels are there written before the year 200?
Fleming wrote fourteen James Bond books. (including two volumes of short stories), which were published between 1953 and 1966. The 007 book series began with Casino Royalewhich was adapted for television in 1954. The James Bond film series began with Dr. No in 1962, and since then it has been one of the most consistent and reliable film franchises in history, with twenty-five official films released. Bond 26 does not yet have writers, and the production company Barbara Broccoli he has yet to find the next actor to play James Bond.
Given the number of James Bond movies compared to the number of Fleming novels, it’s no wonder there are no Fleming book titles that haven’t been used. During the period when Timothy Dalton played 007 in the 1980slas James Bond movies used all of Fleming’s book titles, except for Casino Royale (which finally hit the screen in 2006). However, the movies agent licensed to kill they have always maintained a relaxed approach to adaptations of the novels.
Some movies, like From Russia with love o At the service of his majesty, are reasonably true to the books. However, movies like Moonraker o We only live Twice they just use the title, the location, and some of the characters, and then come up with an original plot. Other James Bond films take various plot elements, characters, and events from various 007 books or short stories and mix them together (for example, For your Eyes Only took key plot elements from the novel Live and Let Die and short story Risk).
What James Bond stories are yet to be adapted?
Throughout the 60 years of James Bond movies, there is little Fleming material worth adapting that hasn’t already been adapted or referenced. The elements from Fleming’s James Bond stories that remain are dated, uncinematic, unfinished, or (as Fleming sometimes admitted) not very good. However, Fleming is not the only author who has written books about 007.
Kingsley Amis wrote Colonel Sun in 1968. Between 1981 and 1996, John Gardner wrote fourteen original James Bond books before he Raymond Benson took over the series with six novels and two short stories between 1996 and 2002. Since then, six other authors have written James Bond books, the last of which, With the mind in sightwent on sale in May 2022.
Most of these post-Fleming novels they’re not crying out to be fully adapted, but some characters and events could be used for Bond 26. The 2018 novel Forever and a Dayof Anthony Horowitz, is a prequel to Casino Royale and contains previously unreleased Fleming material. In it, Bond investigates the death of the previous 007, which could be a good way to introduce the new cinematographic secret agent.
Books with James Bond written after the year 2000
There are also nine James Bond books for teens (and one short story) from Charlie Higsonand later, from Stephen Colepublished between 2005 and 2017. They are set in the 1930s to fit the chronology of Fleming’s James Bond.
Although the young James Bond books are unlikely candidates for Bond 26, there are chances that they will be adapted into a television series (especially with Amazonwhich now owns MGM, and the streaming service is always on the lookout for new content). However, whatever the source of inspiration for the producers of 007, one thing is certain: James Bond will return.
