How Far Is the Divide in the Taliban? This is the Algerian Report

Divisions within the Taliban stronghold are reported between political and military factions.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KABUL – Report on divisions among leaders Taliban sticking out again. Diplomatic and political sources say the strife among Taliban leaders is very real. If this disharmony is not addressed, it will cause further problems for the Afghan people.

As quoted from Aljazirah, a writer and reporter who has spent several years covering the Taliban says the split is the result of a political-military divide. Political sources with decades of ties to the Taliban’s top brass agreed with the assessment. He said the effects of the rift extended from the halls of power to the streets.

The Taliban militias have passed through major cities and forcibly taken the belongings of former officials and families of the former Afghan government. “Right now, all they care about is taking the car and the house,” he said.

The former official’s family said Taliban members had tried to seize their belongings, including a rented house and private car.

While the Minister of Information and Culture, Zabihullah Mujahid, said two days after the Taliban took over the country that they would not do that “We have instructed everyone not to enter anyone’s house, whether they are civilians or the military,” he said.

Mujahid emphasized that there are big differences between the Taliban and the previous government. However, for those familiar with the situation, the current Taliban leadership faces many of the same problems as factions such as the administration of former President Ashraf Ghani.

Sources nearby say, as with other Afghan governments, divisions among the Taliban are falling along the lines. However, unlike past administrations, the Taliban have not only suffered from overly ambitious members or opposing political views, their divisions are far more fundamental.

Currently, the Taliban, the source said, consists of militias still waiting for the spoils of war versus politicians who want to assuage the fears of the Afghan people and the international community.

Previously, public doubts about the group’s unity rose earlier this month. Prime Minister Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar has disappeared from public view. Reports came that Baradar had been killed. However, he reappeared with a pre-recorded statement.

He was seen reading off some sort of statement saying his absence from the public eye was the result of the trip and that the Taliban had compassion, more than a family. In a last-ditch effort to allay suspicions about death or injury, Baradar was photographed attending a meeting with UN officials.
