How Drinking Coffee Can Stain and Damage Your Teeth: Dentist Warns

Watan: Dentist Payal Bhalla warned coffee drinkers that the drink can stain teeth due to the presence of tannins.

Because coffee has an “acidic nature,” the drink can “erode tooth enamel and cause tooth sensitivity.”

“Its diuretic properties can contribute to dry mouth and reduce saliva production, which increases the risk of tooth decay,” Bhalla added.

The dental expert explained: “Saliva plays a crucial role in maintaining oral health by neutralizing acids and removing food particles and harmful bacteria. Dry mouth can increase the risk of tooth decay and bad breath.”

And by drinking coffee, there is an extended period of time that the teeth are exposed to the tannins.

“Tannins are responsible for the dark color in coffee and can stick to the enamel, leading to discoloration and stains on the teeth,” Bhalla explained.

Coffee is also acidic, so “the longer it is in contact with the teeth, the more time it takes to erode the tooth enamel.”

“Drinking coffee slowly exposes your teeth to prolonged exposure to sugar once it is added,” Bhalla said. “This provides more time for the bacteria in your mouth to feed on the sugar and produce acids that can damage enamel.”

And for those who aren’t ready to give up coffee, Bhalla offers some top tips.

He recommended: “Reduce the time your teeth come into contact with coffee by drinking it more quickly. Rinse your mouth with water after drinking coffee to help neutralize acidity and remove staining compounds. Practice good oral hygiene, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental checks.”
