We talk about it a lot these last days, we explain to you how the quotient ranking works.

The FFF should soon announce the end of the amateur championships for this season. It will also detail the method used to determine promotions and relegations. Among the possibilities, there is the establishment of a quotient ranking, but what does that actually change?

Why the quotient ranking?

If in national competitions (N1 and N2), the clubs have almost all the same number of matches and the ranking in the quotient will have no impact, as soon as the number of late matches is important, the ranking in the quotient takes all its meaning. Indeed, the FFF will have to find a fair rule that allows to decide between clubs that sometimes have three or four games played difference. With the quotient ranking, we simply calculate the number of points taken per match. So everyone is on the same basis.

How is the quotient ranking in football calculated?

It is quite simple to obtain the quotient ranking, just take the number of points obtained by the club and divide it by the number of matches played. We then obtain a number between 0 and 3 which makes it possible to put all the clubs at the same level and to classify them.

Will the quotient ranking be used by the FFF?

This is one of the possibilities that could be selected by the FFF to decide between the clubs. This classification could be used at certain levels only or in certain regions where the number of games played is very different from one club to another. It will also depend on the conditions chosen for the ascents or descents. If, in the end, the FFF decides to raise and lower several clubs as little as possible, the quotient ranking may not be used.

An example of using the quotient ranking in amateur football

This quotient ranking could be used to decide between the two teams leading the National 3 Pays de la Loire group. La Roche sur Yon leader with a point ahead of Châteaubriant but the latter has one game less. In the quotient ranking, La Roche sur Yon has a quotient of 2.3333, Châteaubriant is at 2.4118 and would therefore pass in front.

What if clubs are tied in the quotient ranking?

In this case, these are the tiebreaker rules determined by the FFF that will work. General rules which may be different from those used in the championships for the current season.
