The Yemeni Houthi group announced – yesterday, Sunday – that 64 ships succeeded in crossing the Red Sea safely, after raising a banner denying any relationship with Israel. This came in a statement by a member of the group’s Supreme Political Council, Muhammad Ali Al-Houthi, via the X platform, in the context of escalating tension in the Red Sea between the Houthis, the United States, and Britain.
Al-Houthi explained that the best solution to ensure the safety of navigation during the crossing of ships in the Red Sea is to place the phrase “We have no relation to Israel” on the ship’s automatic identification plate.
He pointed out that this solution has proven successful, as 64 ships were able to cross safely with this ferry, since the beginning of operations against Israeli ships last November.
Al-Houthi condemned the terrorist attacks carried out by the United States and Britain, considering that they caused the greatest harm to the world, and to Europe in particular. He stressed that the failure of these measures so far shows that they are attacking international navigation through the militarization of the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea.
Continued targeting of Israeli ships
For his part, the official spokesman for the Houthi, Mohammed Abdel Salam, said in a tweet on the
Abdel Salam explained that the group will not stop targeting Israeli ships or ships heading to the ports of occupied Palestine. He stressed the need for all countries to be reassured of Yemen’s position and not allow themselves to be a victim of American deception, as he put it.
He called on the United States to stop evading its responsibility to stop the Israeli aggression against Gaza, and not to create unnecessary crises.
Attacks and classification
Last Wednesday, the United States announced the designation of the Houthi group, also known as “Ansar Allah”, as a global terrorist organization. This announcement coincided with the continuation of Houthi attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea, targeting Israeli companies or goods heading to or from Israel, in solidarity with the Gaza Strip, which is subjected to ongoing genocide.
Starting on January 9, tensions escalated in the Red Sea when the Houthis directly targeted an American ship, after they were targeting cargo ships transporting goods to and from Israel.
On January 12, the White House issued a joint statement with 10 countries that, in response to Houthi attacks against commercial ships in the Red Sea, the American and British armed forces carried out joint attacks against targets in areas controlled by the group in Yemen.
Since Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza, which, as of Sunday, resulted in the death of 25,105 Palestinians and the injury of 62,681 others, most of them children and women. This war also caused the displacement of about 1.9 million people, or more than 85% of the population, amid massive destruction of homes and infrastructure, according to Palestinian and international reports.
