Housing crisis in Greece: Historic record in rental prices – 2024-02-18 22:28:19

A historic, negative record for rent prices in Greece with tenants now in despair as year after year they see their rent increase, their wallets empty and their obligations unable to be met.

According to surveys and real estate agencies, Greece is living in the dark days of the housing crisis. Since 2018 rent prices have increased by 52%.

According to Eurostat data, many turn to their immediate family to ask for financial help:

  • 45.5% of Greeks are late paying either their mortgage or their rent.
  • 36.9% of fellow citizens are unable to pay either their rent or the mortgage installment.
  • 74.6% of renters in Greece spend more than 40% of their income on rent.

The cost of building new properties has caused, according to experts, a blackout in the market as there will be few available properties.

The tenants are asking for a brake to be put on the frantic course of increases and an organized plan to deal with the housing crisis.
