Households See Increase in Purchasing Power According to Nibud Report

The vast majority of households have a little more to spend this year. People with children can even make significant progress. Single minimum income earners will have to hand in 2024, from 40 to 60 euros per month. This is evident from a purchasing power calculation by budget institute Nibud.

After two years of loss of purchasing power, Nibud director Arjan Vliegenthart is “not dissatisfied” with the overall financial picture. “I think many people will be happy,” he said in an interview with NOS. “They have more perspective after last year’s blow. This will be a year to recover financially and to replenish the reserves.”

Partly due to an increase in child benefit and the child-related budget, purchasing power for families with low incomes improves by tens of euros per month. Low incomes without children are actually worse off.

“That group actually had too little to spend,” says Vliegenthart, who points out that this group is severely affected by the abolition of the energy surcharge. “A few tens less per month is quite a lot for a small wallet. They will continue to have to figure out the household budget this year.”

Purchasing power calculations 2024:

Example household: Change in purchasing power: Amount per month: Single welfare -3.60% -61 euros Single parent 1 child welfare -1.80% -43 euros Single parent 2 children welfare +2.50% +66 euros Single €25,000 benefit -3.20% -60 euros Single AOW + € 7500 +3.60% +82 euros Single working €35,000 +3.30% +81 euros Single parent 1 child working €35,000 +3.20% +109 euros Couple without children dual earner €35,000 and €35,000 +3.00% + 142 euros Couple 3 children dual earner €90,000 and €45,000 +4.30% +344 euros Single self-employed €40,000 -1.20% -40 euros Source: Nibud

Two years ago, energy costs for households rose sharply after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. According to Nibud, this is now largely being repaired because wages and benefits are rising, while prices are rising less rapidly.

In some cases, workers with children will have to spend more than 300 euros more per month this year. This is because child benefit has been increased by a few tens of euros and the child-related budget has increased considerably.

It is a stroke of luck, especially for low-income singles, who are worse off, that the energy price has only fallen in recent months. But according to Vliegenthart, that is the only boost for this group. “Other products have certainly not become cheaper. For many people it remains an uncertain time financially.”
