The Brussels court ordered searches on Tuesday at the Luxembourg company Avrox, which supplied 15 million mouth masks to the Belgian state. In June, an investigation had already been opened into the sale of the masks. The searches were coordinated by Eurojust and took place in different countries. According to the newspaper The evening, who reported the news online, it included house searches in Luxembourg. The Brussels public prosecutor’s office confirms the searches, but does not want to give further details. According to the public prosecutor, this concerns an investigation into, among other things, forgery of documents, use of false documents, fraud, money laundering and obstruction of the freedom of auction or registration.
The Wilmès government promised a fabric mouth mask for every Belgian at the end of April 2020. Defense subsequently issued a public tender. Two companies, including Avrox, were awarded the contract.
Harmful in use
Several companies protested against this at the time. There were many questions around the company, including the experience it claimed to be able to present. The company did not respond to our questions.
At the end of February it became known that the Avrox masks potentially harmful to health. Sciensano then advised, on the basis of a preliminary investigation by the Superior Health Council (SHC), not to use the masks anymore. The face masks would contain nanoparticles of silver and titanium oxide. The report of the SHC did not rule out that the toxicological threshold values could be exceeded during use.
