Earlier in the day, State Secretary Ankie Broekers-Knol (Justice) praised Van der Plas for her ‘creativity’. Van der Plas is annoyed that especially Dutch people in rural areas have to deal with reception centers for asylum seekers. She notes that many government buildings are partially or completely empty and that they may be able to relieve the overcrowded asylum reception.
Broekers-Knol reacted positively to Van der Plas’ proposal on Thursday morning. “I appreciate your creativity,” said the secretary of state on Thursday morning during a committee debate on Afghanistan. The minister agreed to look at the possibilities, but at the same time emphasized that permission from the municipality is also necessary.
