Switzerland experienced a tropical night from Thursday to Friday, with temperatures not falling below 20 degrees over much of the territory. The record was recorded in Pleigne, with 23.4 degrees, yet the locality is 800 meters.
Temperatures are already expected to approach or exceed 30 degrees by midday, Meteonews said in a statement on Friday. In the afternoon, the thermometer could go up to 32 or 35 degrees.
Such values are records for the second half of August. Meteonews even expects the hottest temperatures of the year for a few measuring stations.
Besides Pleigne, the hottest nighttime values in French-speaking Switzerland were measured in Evionnaz with 22.1 degrees, in Vevey with 21.9 degrees and in Lausanne Pully with 20.8 degrees.
The risk of thunderstorms will increase overnight from Friday to Saturday and a cold front will arrive on Saturday, bringing rain. Temperatures will drop but will not be cool. / ATS
